What is the Meke Meter?

The Meke Meter is a unique wellbeing and performance tool created by The Meke Foundation to help rangatahi measure and reflect on their personal growth. It tracks progress across the four dimensions of hauora — taha tinana (physical), taha hinengaro (mental and emotional), taha wairua (spiritual), and taha whānau (family and social). The Meke Meter encourages self-awareness, goal setting, and accountability, allowing each rangatahi to celebrate their wins and identify where extra support is needed. It’s more than a measure — it’s a movement towards being the best version of yourself.

THREE DOMAINS OF HEALTH

Mental Wellbeing

Mental wellbeing in the Meke Meter focuses on how rangatahi think, feel, and cope with life’s challenges. It’s about developing a strong and positive mindset, managing emotions, and building resilience through self-awareness and reflection. Rangatahi learn to recognise their thoughts and feelings, express themselves in healthy ways, and develop strategies to stay calm and focused under pressure. The Meke Meter helps track how well they’re managing stress, making positive choices, and staying motivated. Good mental wellbeing means feeling confident, balanced, and capable — ready to face challenges with a clear mind and a positive attitude.

Social Wellbeing

Social wellbeing in the Meke Meter is about the strength of a rangatahi’s relationships and their sense of belonging with whānau, friends, and community. It focuses on how they connect, communicate, and contribute to the people around them. Building trust, showing respect, and supporting others are key indicators of strong social wellbeing. Through the Meke Meter, rangatahi reflect on how they interact with their peers, handle conflict, and uphold positive relationships. When social wellbeing is strong, they feel valued, connected, and part of something bigger — creating a foundation for teamwork, confidence, and collective growth within their community.

Physical Wellbeing

Physical wellbeing in the Meke Meter focuses on how rangatahi care for and strengthen their bodies. It’s about building healthy habits through regular exercise, good nutrition, rest, and personal hygiene. The Meke Meter helps rangatahi track their energy levels, fitness goals, and overall health, encouraging them to take pride in their physical growth and performance. It also highlights the importance of balance — knowing when to push hard and when to recover. Strong physical wellbeing means having the strength, stamina, and discipline to stay active, confident, and ready to take on challenges both on and off the field.
